Justify It

(text heavy but there are pretty pictures!)

After school, I decided to take a year off before getting back into any study. I hadn't picked a career path and after 12 years of school, I'm pretty sure I deserved the break.

Somehow, my one year off, magically turned itself into four! (I wish my bank account would do the same) After a little encouragement from work to further my tertiary education and the possibility of having them assist financially, I decided to apply for uni.

The catch with work assisting is that I have to justify why they should pay part of my course. Having never been keen on uni, it freaked me out. How was I supposed to convince them to pay if I wasn't even convinced to go?! So I had to go and do some research.

The level of detail I went to on this course is actually quite surprising. I never would have done it if it weren't for having to justify it. I found out the costs, the units available, what my electives were, what the units covered. I even went as far as looking at what the assessments were for the units I'd be studying and the order I'd study them.

It was a very lengthy process and it wasn't easy. The outcome though, is the fact I've picked a university degree I am unbelievably happy with. In the end, writing the justification for work wasn't hard at all because I'm excited about it, regardless of the financial assistance. I know I'll be singing a different tune when it comes time for assessments and exams but at least for now I am happy with my choice.

The exercise is invaluable. I would suggest anyone picking a university degree do the same thing. If you're unsure it will let you in on all the components so you can make an informed decision. The course overviews you read in the brochures you get at school aren't that detailed.

If you still can't pick something, I would definitely advise not picking anything and taking a year (or four?) off. It's not the best idea to spend time or money on something you're not sure about.

What would you say if you had to convince someone to let you do the course you've chosen?

Eeep, Uni seems so very, very long away for me! I think I'd like to do Medicine. I think I need to possibly research more career options, aha!
Congratulations for applying and I'm so, so happy for you!
AND YES I'D LOVE TO MEET UP!
BUTBUTBUT I'M ONLY THERE FOR 4 DAYS?! WHICH IS SO CRAZY BECAUSE WE ALWAYS STAY FOR LONGER D:::
And my cousin was just born so that means most likely staying home most days (though I lovelovelove babies and he's so, so, so adorable!)
I visit most years, and quite possibly will be visiting again in the summer holidays :)
SO YES, ONE DAY VERY SOON, WE SHALL HAVE TEA AND SCONES :)
(I'm even thinking of moving to Perth for uni with my brother, but I still really have to have a big think about my future!)

BUT YAY! I'm so happy that you're happy with your choice :)
All my love!

First of all,
good on you for going back to school! It's tough, but is worth it.
As for how I would plea with someone to let me take my course, it might go something like this:

This course is everything I love, and nothing can compare to filling yourself with as much knowledge as possible.

I'm sure it would be more lengthy in real life...but meh.

And you also are strong and will do wonderfully in school!

What are you going to study?
I had the same problem: finished school & had no idea what I wanted to do. I didn't see the point in going to uni if I wasn't sure what exactly I wanted to study, it kinda seemed like a waste.
However over the last year I've been doing a traineeship at work, which is pretty much schoolwork! (ew) & I thought well since I'm already in the mode I should study something that I'm interested in - and that's why I chose psychology. I'm still not sure what I want to do with my life but at least I'm keeping my options open & doing something I enjoy at the same time.
Good luck, lovely x
