Well, the last installment in a long and interesting day. We got to The Nonna's to see one of her friends leaving with a bag full of home grown goodies. The stories these two ladies could tell...DO tell. The Nonna's neighbour missed out greatly in the common decency, politeness and likeability departments when he was created. We spent a good twenty minutes discussing the various scenarios they had encountered recently. We all came to the conclusion that 'he just doesn't get it', and after her friend "the Slav Lady" left, we decided to go inside for tea.
Apparently, we'd arrived at an inconvenient time, as, according to The Nonna, it was getting cold, and My Uncle was meant to be visiting tomorrow to water the broad bean plants, so she had to go and make sure all the rows were ready for him. We were told, in no uncertain terms, to go inside and make a 'cuppa tea o caffe' and wait, she wouldn't be long. We obliged, as you do.
She took just long enough for me to be able to walk down to the gourmet deli that we new stocked New Norcia bread, and come to know that they had sold out. I put my name down for one of their BirdSeed Loaves (YUM!) coming in next weekend. $6.00 for a loaf of bread...doesn't seem so much when you've travelled 200km for it.
Must note that there was a sign on the door saying they had the Maggie Beer icecream in stock, Burnt Fig Jam with Honeycomb & Caramel. I love watching Maggie's show on the ABC (the Cook and the Chef) and she has such a simple extravagance about her food. I had to try this icecream! The cost? $10.95. The size. 500mL. Yes, you read correctly. I still bought it, and I realise it's a good thing I did.
It tastes WONDERFUL. It's my gift for my fruitless day in the search for New Norcia bread.
Anyway, I'm getting off track. We spent an hour or so with The Nonna, who was her usual self, complaining that we 'never take her out', even though we offer and are rejected many a time (at which point she changes the subject and gets a cheeky grin). In the end though, she's pretty cool. Asks me about 4 times in 10 minutes "owa you daling?". Maybe I should mix up my responses for a bit of variety...
I had such a wonderful day spent with Mother Dearest. Our days together are like the weather in Melbourne. All the seasons of emotion in one day. It's great.

i loved reading about your adventure, I wish I could have done all that. I might need to find out where I can get some of the not for the public bread.
