Tattoos.

There are a range of reasons behind why someone will decide to get a tattoo. Creative expression, spur of the moment, drunk decisions, reflection of values, wanting to rebel, personal reminders.
Personally I like clever tattoos, ones that are thought through, unique & have a good story behind them. Patterns, bum-toppings, starsigns, roses or butterflies don't sit well with me.**
I do know butterflies represent change & growth, I love that meaning behind them, but they are so common these days they've lost their effect.
Star signs are personal but they're personal to 1/12 of the world as well. Having said that, some are really well done & not as simple as the zodiac sign, in those cases, they can be pretty cool - because they've had a lot of effort put into them.
"What about when you get old?"
"What happens if you don't like it later on?"
"Will your work let you have it?"

It's good as long as you have Answers :
- This needs to be thought about. It's often why people (girls in particular) put their tattoo in obscure places, it's easily hidden as life goes on. On the other hand though, they're a reminder of your/our youth. Stories to tell our children & our grandchildren, to let them know we have been there, done that, gotten the tattoo.
- If you think your mind might change, don't get it. It's really quite simple. Obviously if someone's decided to get the tattoo, they don't think their mind will change. This is the same with partners names, friend tattoos (yes, Em, I do understand), things change, you need to think of all possible outcomes before you permanently mark your body.
- In reality, tattoo's don't affect your work, they just don't. The other reality is that some companies with face-to-face customer service roles may not want that "image" portrayed. That's a fact you have to keep in mind & you can't complain if they don't like it. But, they are easily hidden at interviews.

We all know I have one. It's on my shoulder & can make for difficult dressing when it's hot & I want to wear sleeveless shirts to work. I still like it though. It's very personal, I'm yet to see someone with anything remotely similar. It's a great conversation starter, even if the conversation isn't great. I'm now looking at getting my second one, probably for my birthday. I've already drawn it up, it's just a case of looking at it everyday for a few months to make sure I'm happy with it.
Over to you now. Do you have one? Why did you get it? Do you still like it? or...Do you dislike them altogether & would never do anything like that?
*Stole the title idea from this post.
**If you have any of these, don't take offense - if you do, it means you care too much about what someone else thinks.

It's going to be a very meanigful thing for me when I do finally get my first tattoo. It's going to be about something I really beleive in and never want to lose sight of.
And I don't know about the people who have ordinary tattoos. Sometimes an ordinary tattoo still has a story. Really. I knew a girl with a simple pattern on her ankle and the story behind it was so dark I could cry.
I've been wanting my tattoo for so long, it's like I'm already tattooed! It's just a matter of moneys!
no tatoo, but if u need a choice defintely first, very creative.
I have two tattoos. An outline of a star in the middle of my right forearm and a large old-school Sailor Jerry style piece that takes up the whole of my left forearm. I am thinking about having the star removed so I can utilise the space on my forearm better. It was my first tattoo (at 18) and I wish I'd thought about it more...
I got my other tattoo at 19 and it is an amalgamation of images that encompass the idea of a 'beautiful disaster' and living your life to the full - that amazing things happen even when circumstances appear dire...
I don't have any and don't plan to ever get one. I do appreciate the art in it and that its that persons choice. I simply don't want one. I actually have 2 friends planning get one and i think both designs are cute. ^. ^
You know all my thoughts and love of tattoos, so I will just say HOW FUCKING ROCKING IS THE DOT TO DOT!? :D
Oh, and hun, if you do find that you want to cover your tattoo sometimes now, I wouldn't suggest getting the cap sleeve anytime soon-I wouldn't want you to get sick of it or regret it if you want it covered for a special occasion or anything :\ Just do up a bunch of sketches and tape them to your arm- see what you think, have a think for a while and if you still want it, go for it!
i've always liked tattoos.. and considered getting one a few times.. but ya.. i'm way too scared.. i think you should go for it!
Ya know, I've always wanted to get a tiny purple lizard on the back of my neck. Im not sure why, so dont mark me as a star/butterfly/etc idiot, perhaps its just a personal craving or gut desire (?). But I think you should get another tattoo, if you feel that you want too. :)
I personally could never get one, but my bestfriend has tons. She regrets a few of them, but she plans on getting those covered up with something else. I guess as long as you're alright with having some kind of ink on you, what you originally get isn't necessarily always going to be there haha
woooow! i've always liked tattoos....
Haha, the spiderman's funny, what is yours???
I got a tattoo when I was 16 - stole my sisters clothes to look 18 (naughty - but hey, it worked) and I randomly picked a celtic symbol for the lower left side of my stomach. Now - having had two operations which have sliced through my artwork I am going to get it changed into a design I actually like this year!! Leaves, flowers etc - more girly. Love the first pic you posted on her leg! xx
the first one is really funny :D
LOL I have a butterfly but in saying that I looked for a gothicky sort of design on the net and then got the tattoo artist to make some minor changes. I've seen a couple of chicks with similar tats though and yesterday saw a shirt in Jayjays that had a similar butterfly... d'oh. Ah well, I still love it and in the end that's all that counts. I wouldn't personally get a tattoo of a spider but other people do and power to them.
Oh, and added you to my blogroll honey, hope you don't mind.
I have nothing against tattoos or the people who get them. I have admired some cool skin art over the years.
However, for myself it's just not something I think I'll ever do.
I am too fickle. I go through so many fashion/psychological phases in my life that a tatt might send me crazy if it doesn't represent what I want it to represent as my moods and my life changes.
However, if I ever found something that would mean everything to me for the rest of my life. Something that would never ever change - I would consider it.
Having said that, I wouldnt get my hubby's name on my body. Ever. You just never know...even if you're in love and committed. I would find it kind of tacky even if we were together forever (hope that doesn't offend anyone).
@lickmycupcakes re: the shoulder, yeah, change of heart, thought about ribs, on the right. OR, top of my thigh - would need a bit of redesigning if I'm gonna do it on my leg though...
I'm getting impatient. Might buy it for myself when I finish my weekend job...
Love the owl, and the connect the dots one is fun, though would you want that on you for life? Probably not. I've never found a design that I loved enough to make permanent.
I can't recommend "Cat On A Hot Tin Roof" enough! Elizabeth Taylor and Paul Newman both looking damn fine, and Burl Ives being hilarious. I had the pleasure of seeing in on the big screen at a special showing, and Liz was just so PERFECT it was almost maddening.
I really do love that owl! It's darling. I have a little thing for owls. If I were to tattoo something I might pick an owl, maybe something Alaskan-y. But... it might hurt too much!
I have two and I still like them. I thought about them for a year prior though to make sure there would be no regrets.
Thanks! I really like it.
i love tattoos. even the most silly ones. i think theyre amazing, and more importantly, they're becoming more socially acceptable. it's not as big of a deal to try to enter the workplace with tattoos anymore. as long as it makes you happy, do it!
I also love tattoos, just not on me. There is an amazing one that I came across on Flickr a while back: http://www.flickr.com/photos/kaylah7/3013093882/in/set-72157607706942038/
Lovely!
I adore tattoos! :D
No tattoo for me. What is your current tattoo design?
Great post! I actually have one on my wrist of my signature. I got it when I was very young, but luckily do not regret it. =)
RYC: Grits is ground corn, very similar to polenta with the consistency of porridge. It's usually combined with meats as its very starchy.
I waited 8 years after drawing it to get my first tattoo. Never stopped liking it :)
I'll get more of my back piece done for my birthday this year. And I'm pretty sure no one else has my roses, roses with blue stars and ivy are pretty unique :) And they are so gorgeous, I still love them.
Do I have any? No. Do I absolutely love them? Yes!
the spider man tattoo is super hot and gross. lol
I love tasteful tattoos. I have one on my wrist of a melting clock (I love "The Persistence of Memory"), and one on my hip of a mushroom that I got when I was 15 and then added a crescent moon above it with matching patterns when I was 17.
So far the only "legal" one was the clock. I'm thinking of getting one of Jeff Thomas's characters on me, not sure what though. If you aren't familiar:

My boyfriend sent me that once when we were on different sides of the country.
I have a four leaf clover on my ankle I got when I was 15. I actually wanted it since I was 12 and my mom let me get it because I never changed where I wanted it or what is was going to be. It's a symbol of my family's heritage. I also have had very bad luck in my life and figured it was time to make a change. I have 3 pink star outlines on my shoulder for a friend who passed away. We always said we'd get them on our birthday and I got them in remembrance.
My next tattoo is going to be a sleeve incorporating the 3 stars because they've begun to fade and I'd like to mark the milestones in my life, good and bad.
Do it! My first tattoo was a dead tree on my ribcage all the way down my side. Everyone said I was crazy but I did it. My mom freaked but was ok when she knew it would be covered by my wedding dress?! ha. But the dead tree has a meaning. I always remember seeing dead trees when I was little thinking that they are so beautiful. It is a reminder to me that there is beauty in everything, even death. Not to fear death and take it as peaceful and a beautiful part of life. I don't regret it. And now I am going to get more on my leg. I don't know what yet but I want it to have meaning as well.
I got my first tattoo just over a month ago on the run up to my 19th birthday. I've always wanted one, I had friends who have been willing to tattoo me from the age of 15 but I always said no. Firstly because it was illegal and wasn't that trusting of their abilities at the time, secondly as much I did my fair share of rebelling against my parents they would have hit the roof and most importantly I wanted to wait until I was ready and sure about the design.
My tattoo is an eye of horus on my wrist, so not an original idea, but it reminds me of a childhood obsession with egyptians that never really faded with age. So now I have something physical that will never fade to remind me of this.
Hey... I got my first tattoo in May... it on the inside of my left wrist, it says TOM, its written in my handwriting... i dont regret it and i dont think i ever will, i already have another 5 planned. Dont worry Tom is not my boyfriend, he is my little brother, who has ADHD, ADD and Autism, and i got it to show him that love is unconditional, and that i will always be there for him and will always always love him no matter what. Tattoo's are a wonderful and brilliant idea, it was the best £20 i ever spent in my life and if a simple bit of ink beneath the skin can give a little boy hope and security and proof of love, then its worth it
I am getting #6 done tomorrow & love each & everyone I have. My first I got at 16, my Dad is covered in ink from head to toe almost! Each one has a different/special meaning my most special are the ones of my kids names & birthdays that they helped to design you can see them here if your interested
